Suzhou: gardens, canals and silk
A day across the Delta
The shape of the day
Suzhou is the Delta’s most refined day trip: a classical garden, a canal street and a craft that made the city rich. We keep the pace slow enough to look properly, and avoid the order that puts every visitor in the same courtyard at the same time.
What makes it different
- The Humble Administrator’s Garden with a guide who can read it.
- A canal-side lunch and a walk through the old quarter.
- A silk workshop, from cocoon to loom.
- Door-to-door by car, or the high-speed train if you prefer.
Step by step
Morning · The garden
Leave Shanghai after breakfast and arrive in Suzhou before the garden fills. We walk the courtyards slowly, reading the borrowed views, the rockeries and the water that holds the whole design together.
Midday · Canal quarter
Lunch near the water, then a walk through the old lanes. This is not a shopping stop: it is the residential Suzhou that most day-trippers miss.
Afternoon · Silk
A working silk workshop, not a showroom. We watch the reeling and weaving, ask the questions that matter, and leave time for a proper cup of tea before the drive back.

Good to know
